Beauty Tips

Healthy Hair
The following preparations can be used to address some of the most common follicle complaints:

Do away with dandruff
Dandruff is caused by increased cell renewal in the scalp - usually as a result of poor diet, sluggish metabolism, hormone imbalance, or radical dietary change. Excess fat and sugar also cause changes in cell renewal or follicle secretions. Foods such as broccoli, eggs, nuts, liver, fish and bran, are recommended to prevent dandruff.

The wrap

2 tbsp olive oil

2 tbsp nettles
2 cups boiling water

Steep herbs in water for 20 minutes. Strain. Pour onto hair and work into scalp. Leave for 15 minutes. Rinse.

Dreaded dryness
Dry hair is often the result of underactive sebaceous glands, excessive heat-styling and poor circulation. Suggested foods to combat dryness include eggs, milk, avocados, olives, pawpaw and pumpkin.

Egg shampoo
2 eggs
2 tbsp water
1 tbsp apple cyder vinegar
Blend ingredients together. Massage into scalp. Rinse with tepid water. (This is important as hot water will cause eggs to set.) Nature`s hot oil treatment
5 ml almond oil
5 ml wheatgerm oil

Dullness vs shine
Boost shine and combat dullness by preparing the following:

Silky shine
1 tbsp vinegar
1 cup tepid water
Dilute. Pour over hair. Comb and rinse.

Dull defence
Saturate dry hair with equal measures of olive and almond oil. Blow-dry for 5 minutes. Leave for a further 20 minutes. Comb through. Shampoo and condition as per usual.
Note: Dull hair should be rinsed with cold water, as hot water causes cuticles to swell and will create an uneven surface - giving an even duller appearance. Cold water also closes cuticles and ensures an all-over shine.

Damaged hair control
To treat over-processed or sun-damaged hair:

Damage control
3 tbsp oil (olive or canola)
plastic wrap
hot towel (soaked in hot water and wrung out)
Massage oil into hair for 5 minutes. Cover with plastic wrap and towel. Leave for 20 minutes. Rinse and shampoo as per usual.

2 tsp cucumber juice
1 tsp milk powder
Mixed together, they create a soothing mask for eylids. Leave for 10 minutes.
Potato: Raw potato slices placed over the eyes relieve dark circles, bags and puffy eyelids.
